the poem i would give my soul , describes the beginning of Dorian's corruption at the hands of Lord Henry. Lord Henry invites Dorian into Basil's garden and talks him about the youth, beauty, and the value of immorality. for him beauty is a form of genius, and beauty and youth are above all else. Henry imparted to Dorian this conviction that drives the protagonist at the damnation. In fact he would give his soul for eternal youth. the beauty for dorian is the most important thing, and vanity is his vice. his tentatives of altruism are driven by a desire to improve the appearance of his soul. vanity is his original sin. Dorian begins the novel as an innocent youth. Under Lord Henry's influence he becomes corrupt.

    dorian’s death

Dorian decides to erase his past, and to focus on a positive future. He breaks the mirror given to him by Lord Henry, a symbolic rejection of his own vanity and the corrupting influence of Henry. vanity, not morality, drove his action, proving once again that Dorian is a condemned soul.
Dorian so decide to kill the picture but kills himself, the man in the portrait becomes young and beautiful, while the real Dorian becomes old and repugnant. Dorian, seeing the knife, thinks that "As it had killed the painter, so it would kill the painter's work" (177), but at the work and the painter are granted the immortality of art
The knife used by Dorian is the same one he had used to kill Basil
